What happens at a dental checkup and cleaning

If you have not been in a while, the unknown is half the worry. A routine visit is more straightforward than most people expect.

The cleaning

A hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from above and just below the gumline, then polishes. They may measure the small spaces (pockets) between teeth and gums, which helps show gum health.

The exam

The dentist looks at teeth, gums, the lining of the mouth, the tongue, throat and jaw joint. They check for decay, worn or cracked teeth, old fillings and signs of gum disease, and they usually do a quick screening for oral cancer.

X-rays

X-rays show what the eye cannot: decay between teeth, bone levels and infection at the root. How often you need them depends on your history and risk. Tell the office if you are or might be pregnant.

How often should you go?

“Every six months” is common, but it is not a rule for everyone. People with healthy mouths may go less often; people with gum disease or frequent cavities may go more. Ask your dentist what interval suits you and why.

Questions worth asking

  • What did you find, and what is most important?
  • Is anything urgent, or can we watch it?
  • What would you suggest I do at home differently?
  • Can you give me a written treatment plan?
